Cardiff University Online Journalism 2007

The online journalism diploma module at JOMEC

its no bloody wonder there's a problem with stress and alcoholism in journalism, nothing to do with the traumatic things they cover, its because of stupid irrational ridiculously infuriating technological problems that will eventually result in a mass suicide pact amongst all journalists in the world and then the planet will be without its news forever more, all thanks to Ning, HTML, and Windows. I HATE IT!! I spent an entire day of my life trying to sort out stupid problems like half the text randomly turning red and going really small, eventually got it working, checked it on two different computers and it all worked fine, have come back today and its screwed it up all by itself when i haven't even touched it because some peasant in the Ning's technical team changed a tiny bit of code in the audio file which meant it no longer worked and for no obvious reason all the hyperlinks had decided they'd got bored of going to actual websites and instead directed themselves back to the Ning homepage! ARSE!

ps Matt this is a rant against the technology itself, not the decision to use it, the principle of which im all in favour of!

pps i think ive fixed it now but is anyone else having similar random problems?!

your audio works fine and the text isn't all red - how did you fix it?

haha yes have calmed down now! something happened to the HTML code with the hyperlinks - not sure why or how but I think the text all went red because it was treating entire paragraphs as a hyperlinks rather than just occasional words - but because only certain words were actually links it removed the ability to click on the rest of the text yet kept it red and went small (why I have no idea, if anything you'd expect it to go blue and bold rather than red and small!). Cut a long story short i went through the code and removed all the lines of: h ref = "somethingrandom" and name = "somethingrandom" that weren't supposed to be there and it worked! As for the audio something did change with the original code between Tuesday and today which meant it no longer talked to the audio thing - deleting and copying new code in worked fine.

apologies for the rant, all sorted now!
