Quote of the Day: it seems a bit premature to put a $60-billion industry on the endangered species list

Here's a piece that ran on CNN Money today suggesting that America's newspaper biz might have some life in it yet.

Is the writer being too optimistic or will audiences adapt and embrace many mediums just as they have with movies, video-rental and pay-per-view.

What do you think?

It's nice to have some good news about an industry (maybe not American newspapers but still..) a lot of us want to go into! It's good to have some optimism for a change and for someone to sing the praises of what I agree is still a unique business. Don't get me wrong, i read a lot of my news online but for lots of people, the best way to feel part of a community is to read the local paper, and I don't think online local news has as much of that feel.

Interesting article on Poynter about Sam Zell, majority owner of the Tribune, who thinks newspapers have been complacent

"I think the newspaper industry has stood there and watched while other media enterprises have taken our bacon and run with it," he said. "It's too much complacency."
However, he is going to maintain his investment for at least 10 years, and is investing over $300m in the buyout - quite telling really.

Newspapers aren't done yet, and Rachel's point is a good one. There's life in the old dog yet.

Anyway why is no one banging on about the epaper/flexi screens (what ever you want to cause them) that's going to be fun.
