Capturing Cardiff proposal: Is the Cardiff music scene a local place for local people?

When conducting interviews with various bands from South Wales I discovered that despite there being a wealth of new music and a good diversity of shows in Cardiff, there is a strong feeling that the city’s music scene is becoming stagnant and almost incestuous, with the same local bands being put on by the same promoters .As a result people are ‘sticking to what they know’. Therefore, when bands from outside Wales perform, the turn-out is poor to say the least. Why is this?

My interest lies in finding out just how open the Cardiff scene is to bands from outside Wales. In order to do this I will talk to promoters from Cardiff, and also London, so that I may compare the two. I will interview promoters, bands and fans from inside Wales. Following this I will interview bands from outside Wales and discuss the attendance and reactions to the shows they have played in Cardiff. Do they play to welcoming or skeptical crowds?

Is Cardiff music scene a local place for local people, or is it the diverse, receptive city it claims to be?

Is the story.....Is Cardiff music fulfilling its potential? If so it's a good story. The obstacle you have to overcome here is making a story that is pretty "inside" for the music community relevant and interesting to a general readership.

- Is that doable?
