Well, that last hour was not really what I came to university for to be honest.
I expected that in the Nokia Trends Lab workshops we would be shown how to use the phones we had been told about all morning. In reality we were just given them with no instruction, and although once we had grasped the basic principles it was not excessively hard to film a one minute clip, most of our time was spent pressing buttons randomly. We could have achieved such knowledge of the phones on our own.
However, what I really object to is the two-man camera crew who were on hand to film what is presumably going to be made into promotional material for Nokia. Once cornered, we were asked whether we used the phones a lot. This is our first time, we said. Just pretend you use them often, we were told. They seemed quite happy as we lied for a couple of minutes, saying how useful we found the Lab and how this certainly was the future. We did ask if Nokia's long term interests would be better served by us telling the truth and saying that we didn't think the day had been organised well, but were told (by the cameraman) that lies are the reality of journalism. Which I'm sure is something Cardiff JOMEC is keen to promote.
